"How Did the Holmcrosses Die Out?" and "Why Was Rudy Spared?"

There's been a question that's been bothering me as of late, and largely there's not even any fanfic explanations save my own "Light of Hope". That question? How do you kill something that was made to survive under any conditions like the Holmcrosses? With their innate skill with ARMs and most likely intensive fight training, how could the Elw get rid of them?

My solution is: they created a new condition or changed a current one to one in which the Holmcrosses simply could not handle. But how could they do that? Three words: virus or bacteria. If they could attack them from the inside, they could weaken them so that they were easy to kill or just outright kill them with the disease. If the Elws were able to bring life to metal (i.e. the Holmcross race), then is it so preposterous to think that they could create or alter something small as at least a type of bacteria or even a virus to do their work for them?

Of course, this is all just a theory, but it deserves some consideration. The only other way they could have gotten rid of them completely that I can think of involves explosives.

Something else bothers me that's an offshoot of the current topic: if the Elws weren't exactly pleased about their invention, why did they let one (Rudy) live, even in (presumably) some sort of suspended animation? For that matter, did they actually let the so-called "experimental" version (or as I call it, "Holmcross 2.0) live, or did some renegade Elw/Human/Holmcross take it and hide it somewhere so that the Elw at large could not destroy it? I personally go for the latter thought, but that's just me.

There is something in the game that could be taken as evidence for the latter if looked at in a certain way. Mariel, who might have had a chance to see a younger Rudy since her brother was one of the Elws involved in the Holmcross project, didn't recognize him at all much, much later. Granted, it was about 1,000 years later and Rudy had grown up, but the blue hair should have told her something, unless…

Unless the "experimental" Holmcross had been stolen.

Ah, but still, we have no way of knowing if Mariel was able to see him or not, so it is still very much a theory. But hey, a theory is better than nothing. Theories can at least motivate others to think about it or even inspire fanfics.
